Our new project with TOBFC
In rural communities, a lack of access to proper sanitation can cause significant health problems. This is especially dangerous in communities in which many people are already immunosuppressed, as well as for the elderly and young children. Composting toilets are promising alternatives to the pit toilets that are typical to rural communities in Tanzania: when used and maintained correctly, they are safer and yield useful fertilizer.
When not built or maintained correctly, however, composting toilets can be potentially hazardous. This is why it’s important to invest in proper community education and sensitization around the design and maintenance of composting toilets. The Kujenga Collaborative is embarking on a new project with the Olive Branch to create a variety of tools for community engagement in rural villages, including illustrations, Swahili-language design guidelines, and other resources.
